The collection is an extensive documentation of the development of Rochester General Hospital and medicine in Rochester, N.Y. The collection consists of Board of Directors minutes (1847-1992); correspondence & misc. materials (1847-1991); Henry G. Danforth [d. 1918] papers which especially chronicle building construction, etc. (1908-11); annual reports (1872-1995); financial records (1863-1980s, including Civil War); Medical Staff materials (1873-1991); and departmental records. Includes scrapbook collection (ca. 120, 1929-1996) covering the hospital and the medical community and environment in Rochester; over 22,000 photographic images; dioramas, uniforms, medical equipment and other realia; and subject files on staff, medical topics, etc. Also contains records of the various schools established by the Hospital, including the School of Nursing, School of Medical Technology and the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing.

Rochester General Hospital obtained its charter in 1847 as the Rochester City Hospital. The Hospital opened its doors in 1864 on West Main St. The name was changed to Rochester General in 1911. In the early 1960s, the departments moved to the Northside Division, the current campus of the Hospital.
